A mysterious extrasensory experience which makes mankind leap forward, waking up with no memories in a planet that hides a funny substance, a crepuscular enclave surrounded by waters, a daring escape to the edges of the universe as we know it… With different sensibilities and styles, Manuele Fior and Frederik Peeters have both explored a future that looks ever closer, redefining the genre fiction of comics and bringing sci-fi back in the spotlight.

 

I dispettosi is a flock of more than a hundred birds that spend their time on the trees of a park, constantly making up new ways to bother passersby. They are also the protagonists of Emma Lidia Squillani’s last illustrated book. During the workshop the author will do a reading of the story and teach the kids how to draw the characters with stencils.

Three authors who differ in age and personal experience reflect upon the founding events of Mitteleuropean and Scandinavian history through the eyes of their main characters, who contemplate their existence in the face of death, solitude and torment. Rikke Villadsen, author of Tuberculosis 2020, engages with newcomer artists Anna Dietzel and Benedetta C. Vialli.

The work of Antoine Cossé is elusive: between pirate mutinies and long car rides in the company of mysterious magicians, his visual approach is ever-changing and modern. Thanks to his mastering of black and white, his use of silence as a narrative device and the existential ambiguity that pervades his stories, Cossé manages to convey a palpable tension, so that even in the most pervasive calm it feels like the explosion is just around the corner.

In this film there is a limitless space: the Western planes, with their monumental skies and the Rock Mountains slowly peeking out of the horizon. This is the space crossed by the caravan, a real village on wheels. It consists of a small community, which carries on with the hope of finding a better future. In this community there is a ten years old girl. She is not a protester nor a rebel: she is a girl, and in pioneer caravans girls cook, wash the dishes, do the laundry, look after their brothers and sisters. Martha Jane does what she has to. But once she tastes freedom there is no way back. The encounters made and the experience gained give her the chance to create a world of her own to inhabit, a hundred years ahead of her time. Martha Jane can wear trousers, cut her hair, live free. This is what we wanted to talk about, this is the adventure we wanted to tell (Remy Chayé).

From a generative darkness a cave slowly emerges. From the soil of the cave a flower blooms. And from the flower creatures are born. Individual and collective, bodies that merge and define themselves in an ongoing dance which is music and joy, angst and harmony, affirmation of being. We go out the cave and here starts the journey, the growth, the death, the ascension… David Marchetti’s literary debut is a dense and ethereal book, a philosophical exploration and a visual metaphor of rare harmony.

The comics of Anders Nilsen face unarmed the most awkward questions that lie at the roots of human life: what is time? What happens when you die? What is the point of existence? They do it with a clear and direct stroke and a narration that stays in perfect and utterly fragile balance between silence and word, empty and full, development and stalling of the plot. To celebrate the Italian publication of Big Questions (Eris Edizioni), one of the most important comics of recent years, Nilsen reflects upon his career and his work.

Sigaretten Ensemble/01 opens a collective investigation, questioning the hidden artwork of two newcomer authors and three widely renowned ones. Artists who changed the outlines of contemporary graphic novel, a vast territory, relating with tradition and outside languages – drawing, animation, poetry – that manifest in this explorative exhibition, bringing to life a varied and unique mix.

A film troupe arrives to a small town in the countryside to shoot a horror movie. The leading role is assigned to Giulio, a local child who immediately becomes a little celebrity. But the dark side of success emerges and rumors start in the town about Giulio actually having malignant powers. With Bambino Paura, Juta paints a loving and equally scary portrait of the countryside, halfway between slice of life and genre fiction.
